The Burdekin region is one of the last regions in Australia to still burn sugar cane before it is harvested. The First Fire celebrates that fact and involves burning the purpose grown cane to be cut in the Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships. The First Fire and Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships are held at the Home Hill Showgrounds, about one and a quarter hour's drive south of Townsville, and 15 minutes from Ayr. The Burdekin Cultural Fair is held next to the PCYC on Macmillan Street in Ayr.
